Lanyards

Lanyards are a great way of recognising hidden disabilities, while some people do have visible disabilities, this is not always the case. Many people have disabilities that can't be seen, such as Autism, Dementia, Crohn’s disease and deafness. As these disabilities are often unnoticed, this can mean that support is not offered when it is needed. The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower offers a discreet way of identifying people with a hidden disability so help or assistance can be offered without the individual needing to ask.

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower lanyard was first launched at Gatwick Airport in May 2016 and has quickly grown into the most widely accepted Hidden Disabilities scheme in the UK. It has now been adopted by most of the major UK airports, as per our Airport section, supermarkets, local authorities, railway companies as well as in the NHS.

Living with a Hidden Disabilities can make daily life more demanding for many people, but it can be difficult for others to recognise, acknowledge or understand the challenges faced.

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower suggests happiness, positivity and strength and intends to allow everyone with a Hidden Disabilities to choose to be subtly visible when they need to be.

It is a universally recognised flower and is gender neutral.

The design is a bright yellow sunflower placed on a green background so that it is clearly visible from a distance.
